Sharing the Real Story of Entrepreneurship at Salve Regina University

Speaking to the Entrepreneurship Capstone course at Salve Regina University was more than a guest lecture; it was an opportunity to pull back the curtain on what Entrepreneurship and Business Building truly look like through the journey of Trinity Naturals.

Inside the Entrepreneurship Capstone at Salve Regina University

The Entrepreneurship Capstone at Salve Regina University brings together students who are ready to test their ideas against the realities of the marketplace. Walking into that classroom, I was not there to deliver a polished, theoretical talk. I was there to offer a candid account of what it feels like to build a company from zero, to navigate uncertainty, and to lead with impact even when the path forward is not perfectly clear.

Many of the students, including those in the MBA Experience track, were already thinking about their own ventures. My goal was to complement their coursework with the unfiltered side of Entrepreneurship—the long nights, the doubts, the pivots, and the deep sense of responsibility that comes with building something meant to serve others.

Building Trinity Naturals from the Ground Up

When I shared the story of Trinity Naturals, I did not start with the brand as it looks today. I started with the first spark of an idea: creating natural products that people could trust, made with ingredients they could pronounce, and produced in a way that respected both people and planet. That vision was inspiring—but it was only the beginning of real Business Building.

The early days were defined by experimentation. Formulating products at a kitchen table, researching suppliers late into the night, learning regulations the hard way, and testing packaging that sometimes failed before it ever reached a shelf. There were no shortcuts. Every label, every batch, and every customer interaction was a lesson in resilience and refinement.

What It Really Takes to Open and Operate a Business

With the students, I walked through the less glamorous but absolutely essential steps of opening a business. Choosing a legal structure, securing permits, understanding insurance, setting up accounting systems, and building reliable supplier relationships are not the parts of Entrepreneurship that make headlines, but they are the foundation of sustainable Business Building.

I emphasized that operating a business means constantly balancing vision with execution. Cash flow projections matter just as much as product innovation. Hiring decisions require both heart and strategy. And every “yes” a founder gives—to a new product, a new partner, or a new channel—creates a new set of operational commitments that must be honored day after day.

Managing Day-to-Day Operations While Maintaining High Standards

Students were especially curious about how Trinity Naturals manages daily operations without compromising on quality. I shared how every day begins with the basics: production schedules, inventory checks, supplier updates, customer inquiries, and team coordination. Yet woven through all of this is a non‑negotiable commitment to high standards.

Quality control is built into every stage—from ingredient sourcing and batch testing to packaging and shipping. We document processes, track feedback meticulously, and treat every complaint as an opportunity to improve. This is where Impactful Leadership shows up: not only in big strategic decisions, but in the quiet, everyday insistence that the product leaving our facility is something we are proud to put our name on.

Measuring Impact and the People Supported Along the Way

One of the most meaningful parts of the session at Salve Regina University was discussing impact. From the beginning, Trinity Naturals was built to do more than sell products. Over the years, we have supported hundreds of customers seeking safer, more transparent options for themselves and their families, and we have partnered with local makers, suppliers, and small retailers whose livelihoods are intertwined with ours.

Through direct employment, contract work, and collaborative projects, the business has helped support dozens of individuals—from production staff and designers to marketing partners and logistics teams. Sharing these numbers with the students reframed Entrepreneurship as a form of stewardship: every business decision affects real people, real incomes, and real communities. That is the essence of Impactful Leadership.

A Final Reflection for Emerging Entrepreneurs

As the session closed, I encouraged the students to see their MBA Experience and capstone projects as more than academic requirements. They are rehearsals for the real decisions they will face as founders, leaders, and innovators. Entrepreneurship is not only about launching a venture; it is about committing to the daily work of building something that serves, sustains, and uplifts others.

Standing in that classroom at Salve Regina University, sharing the real story of Trinity Naturals, was a reminder that honest conversations about risk, resilience, and responsibility can inspire the next generation of entrepreneurs to build businesses that truly make a difference.
